In this introductory chapter, which has been adapted from The Photoshop Anthology, 101 Web Design Tips, Tricks and Techniques, I’ll cover some of the basic tools and tasks that we’ll draw on in the later chapters. I’ll also share some of the shortcuts and time-savers that I use frequently. This chapter won’t give you an exhaustive review of the many things that Photoshop can do (where would it end!), but it should provide the bare bones that will help get beginners started. If you’re already familiar with the interface and can perform tasks like making selections, applying gradients, and working with layers, you might want to skip ahead to the next chapter.

Before Getting Started

We are living on the golden age of 3D technology, we can see art pieces, architectural models, biological simulations, fantasy creatures, futuristic machines, and almost realistic objects everywhere. Step 1

First off, let’s start by creating a new canvas, with the following attributes…

Step 2

Then let’s put some text down to start with, I am going to start with something simple…

Step 3

Double click on layer or go on Layer menu and then select "Layer Styles". Select Gradient from there and give this color scheme

Apply #5ea6ff color on location 0, #008aff color location 44 and #7abfff on location 100

after this step you will get this effect.

Step 4

In this step apply Bevel and Emboss and follow all settings from screen below.

Step 5

Now follow these values and apply inner glow on text.

Step 6

finally apply Inner shadow on that layer.

now finally your will see this effect

Step 7

Convert current layer to Smart Object from Layer menu and select Smart Object and then Convert to Smart Object or Right click on Layer and select "Convert to Smart Object" from there.

Step 8

Now duplicate that layer and Flip Vertical.

Step 9

Apply mask on layer and apply black and white linear gradient.

Step 10

Select Gradient tool from toolbar and choose black and white gradient from there and apply on masked layer.

Final

Apply different background colors and you can get different looks.

Step 1.

Using the Type (T) tool type the text you want. Use bigger font. I have used Impact font.

Step 2.

Apply Drop Shadow layer effect with parameters as shown in the picture. To display Layer Style dialog window, just double click on the layer in the Layers palette.

Step 3.

Apply Inner Glow layer effect with parameters as shown in the picture.

Step 4.

Apply Bevel and Emboss layer effect with parameters as shown in the picture. One of the new features of Photoshop 6 allows you to have sharp bevel regardless of it’s size (Technique: Chisel Hard).

Step 5.

Apply Gradient Overlay layer effect with parameters as shown in the picture. To change the gradient, click on the gradient image and set the colors as shown.

Step 6.

And that’s pretty much it. Nothing more but layer effects, but looks very nice!

Step 1:

Create a new blank document fill it with black, then use the text tool and type your text in white:

Step 2:

Press Ctrl+J and duplicate layer or duplicate the text layer (layer > duplicate layer) and select that.

Step 3:

Now go to the original layer and go to filter > stylize > wind, then use the following options: (Wind – From the Right)

Step 4:

Press Ctrl + F, this command will repeat last applied filter effect.

Step 5:

Again go to filter > stylize > wind, then use the following options: (Wind – From the Left)

Step 6:

Press Ctrl + F, this command will repeat last applied filter effect.

Step 7:

Now we need to apply this effect to top and bottom of text. Wind filter doesn’t have these both directions.
So for apply this effect to top and bottom we will have to rotate canvas 90 degrees so go on Image > Rotate Canvas > 90 CW" and apply the wind effect in the same way as before as from the left will still be selected it makes sense to do it from the left, remember press ctrl + f to redo it one more time.

Step 8:

Repeat above step in 90 CCW

Step 8:

Use rotate command again from image menu and straight canvas and after that select both layers one by one and go on Layer menu > Layer Style > Color Overlay/Gradient Overlay. using these you can apply different color schemes.
